Mental Performance Training 1

Everything that occurs in the mind affects the body, and everything that occurs in the body affects the mind. Mental barriers like anxiety, low self-confidence, perfectionism, fear, and lack of emotional control keep us from performing up to our full potential. Mental training prepares the mind to help us function at our best, both mentally and physically.

I use Mental Performance Training (MPT) in my work with young athletes, executives, and performers. MPT provides strategies to anticipate, manage, and overcome mental challenges. Through mental training, you will learn skills like positive self-talk, goal setting, mindfulness techniques, and visualization. MPT can also help you overcome physical mistakes like the Yips. Athletes and performers who use mental training can gain an edge in competition by improving confidence, focus, attitude, and motivation, which are crucial to athletic performance.

Having spent over 25 years in a variety of coaching roles in and around sports, I have watched athletes struggle needlessly without the support and tools they need to reach their goals. I noticed a lack of resources for athletes who were either struggling with the mental aspect of their game or were seeking to get a competitive advantage over the competition. I help athletes build and maintain their confidence while improving focus during competition, negate the negative self-talk that many athletes experience, and establish goals that enable them to achieve success. Over the past several years, I have worked with a variety of athletes, from middle school to college, in several sports.

Understanding The Yips For Athletes

The yips are a sudden and inexplicable loss of skills in experienced athletes, characterized by involuntary muscle spasms that can severely impact performance. This phenomenon is often linked to underlying psychological factors such as anxiety, stress, and unresolved trauma.

Eliminating the yips with Brainspotting

Brainspotting (BSP) is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing, and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional and physical pain, trauma, dissociation, and a variety of other challenging symptoms. This therapeutic technique leverages the brain’s natural ability to self-scan and self-heal, making it particularly effective for athletes dealing with performance blocks such as the yips.

How Brainspotting Helps

Identifying The Root Cause

Brainspotting helps pinpoint the exact location in the brain where the negative experiences, traumas, or anxieties related to the yips are stored. By focusing on these brainspots, the therapist and athlete can access the deep-seated emotional and physical blockages contributing to the yips.

Processing Emotional Trauma

Many athletes with the yips have underlying emotional traumas or anxieties that have not been fully processed. Brainspotting provides a safe and effective way to process these emotions, reducing their impact on the athlete’s performance.

Enhancing Focus & Concentration

By resolving the underlying issues causing the yips, brainspotting helps restore the athlete’s ability to focus and concentrate. This enhanced mental clarity allows athletes to perform at their best without being hindered by involuntary movements or distractions.

Reducing Performance Anxiety

Brainspotting helps athletes develop a calmer and more controlled mental state. By addressing the root causes of anxiety, athletes can approach their sport with increased confidence and reduced fear of experiencing the yips.

Rebuilding Confidence

Overcoming the yips through brainspotting can significantly boost an athlete’s confidence. As they regain control over their performance, athletes often find that their overall self-esteem and belief in their abilities are strengthened.
